Chisenhale Studios are offering free* use of their Studio4 Project Space to other artists seeking short-term studio space to execute a project. These residencies will be available in three month blocks, and are interspersed throughout the year with projects, experiments and events curated or delivered by visual artists in our other 39 studios. The aim of each residency is to provide opportunity for one external visual artist to experiment with new work or ideas in a fresh, uncluttered space that facilitates sharing and participation while making artistic processes visible to new audiences.
In exchange for use of the studio, artists undertaking residencies will be expected to share their work through a small public event or sharing in the studio at the end of the period. Ideally, smaller open-door sessions could also happen during the residency, as an opportunity to engage with other Chisenhale members.
We are currently inviting proposals for the next two residencies which will run mid-November to mid-February and March through May. To apply, please write to tell us about the project or idea you are working on, why you need this short-term studio to realise it and for how long. Please also include how you would share your work, or working process at the end of the period and at any points along the way. And of course, include your current CV and up to some images of your work.
Please note that due to the nature of the project space, and its first floor location in the building (there is no lift), the final sharing is best suited for small audiences of about 30 people. It is not a gallery, so not suitable for open exhibition. And by the way, there is no central heating!
Do see our Studio4 Blog for previous residencies and events taking place in our project space – there is a link on our home page www.chisenhale.co.uk/chisenhale
Applications are due Thursday 3rd October at 12 noon. Interviews for short-listed applicants will be held Wed 16th October (tbc).
Submission will only be accepted in the following format:
- Proposal of project idea, including detail of information requested above. One or two A4 pages, minimum font size 11. Please also state if you have a preference for Winter 2013 or Spring 2014.
- Current CV. No more than two A4 pages giving current and relevant experience.
- Supporting images. Text and images from previous projects or illustrating your proposal. No more than four A4 pages, with images saved at a low resolution.
Please combine all the above into one file, clearly marked your name. We will not accept submissions that exceed 8 pages and 5MB file size.
Submissions and queries to firstname.lastname@example.org
Please also note that due to staff summer holidays, we will not be able to respond to any queries about the residencies until 11th September.
*there is no charge for the studio space but electricity will be metered and payable at end of the period.

We are seeking a team of wonderful volunteers to support a very special Open Weekend celebrating over 30 years of art production, exhibition, dance and performance at Chisenhale Art Place.
Many activities and events are planned to take place over the weekend and we are expecting it to be very busy with visitors. We want to ensure everyone taking part has the best possible experience and volunteers play a key part within that.
Are you free to come and join us?
About the Open Weekend
Chisenhale Art Place Open Weekend will take place on 27-29th September. The three days will be a celebration of Chisenhale Art Place’s history and role in the artistic development of London’s East End (and beyond!), and will also highlight the incredible work being produced, commissioned, exhibited and performed right now. Many of the people who have contributed to our success over the years will be joining us that weekend for a unique programme of talks, events and open studios, in addition to on-going exhibitions, classes and activities.
Dates and Times
27th September 2013 6-9pm
28-29th September 12.00pm – 6.00pm
1. Assist with directing the public around the building.
2. Interact with the visitors; help them engage with the various events and activities that will be going on.
3. Help us set up and take down any of the materials needed for the workshops or events.
4. Have fun!
The Weekend will be busy as it is open to the public but there will be plenty of opportunity for volunteers to engage with artists and staff. Volunteers must be over 18 years of age and should have an interest in art and/or undertaking study in relevant subject.
More details will be sent out to all volunteers and an informal briefing will be organised before the event. We are able to pay a per diem to help cover travel and expenses.
Chisenhale Art Place is home to 40 artist’s studios and two arts organisations; Chisenhale Dance Space and Chisenhale Gallery. The Open Weekend celebrates all activities but volunteers are primarily required for the larger studio area of the building. More organisational information can be found on
If you are interested in volunteering that weekend please email email@example.com with your CV and tell us a little about yourself. Could you also please state if you are available for the full weekend?
We will reply by the 13th of September 2013
