Less than 6 days left to apply for our Studio 4 Summer Residency! Follow the link in our bio for more information. Application deadline is April 2nd at noon 🔊

We are inviting proposals for Studio4 Summer Residencies at Chisenhale Studios. Residencies will take place between May and September 2024, ranging between 4-6 weeks depending on your project needs (special exceptions can be made on timescales depending on need).

The residencies provide free use of the Studio4 Project Space to artists seeking a short-term studio to develop an idea or execute a project. The aim of each residency is to provide opportunity for a visual artist to experiment with new work or ideas in a fresh, uncluttered space that facilitates sharing and participation while making artistic processes visible to new audiences. The studio is 700 sq ft (5.1m width x 9.5m length), with two north facing windows.

In exchange for use of the studio, the artist undertaking each residency is expected to engage a wider artistic network as well as people who live and work in our local area, involving them in the artistic process through the development of the work itself or a small public-facing or community event, showing or workshop. Ideally smaller open-door sessions could also happen during the residency, as an opportunity to engage with other studio artists and members.

Chisenhale Studios Summer Residencies Call-Out

Join Into the Wild on the 5th of September 6pm - 7pm for the launch of ‘Contortions’ , an interactive online space created by @artyfartyama for her creative response as Digital Artist in Residence for Into The Wild 2023!

Based on her participation on the online program, Ama has created an interactive collaborative space using FrameVR to share her creative outcomes. Expect drawings, 3D models, animations and a collaborative resources space all about being an early career artist!

Chisenhale Dance Space (CDS) has been a part of Chisenhale Art Place for over 40 years and has been making space for artists to lead, experiment and create ever since. You may have heard about their exciting and newly imagined CDS Artist Community that recently launched and they are now looking for new trustees to support their organisation on the next steps of their future journey.

Could you be part of their Board of Directors?

Chair of the Board – A vital role within their organisation and someone who will play a key part in shaping their future alongside their staff team, artist committee and artist community.

Treasurer – Someone who’ll help keep an eye on the bottom line and support the artist-led vision with a keen financial eye.

Property Expert – With some exciting property plans cooking, they need someone with the know how to help achieve them.

If you’re looking for free creative activities to do with your children (ages 6+) have a look at what’s on offer this Thursday across Chisenhale Art Place.

Here’s the schedule for 17 August:

10 – 11.15am Building a miniature city with artist and sculptor Esther Gamsu.

11.30am – 12.45pm Let’s Dance: Beginner Lindy Hop Dance with Angela Andrews.

1.30-2.45pm Play with words and found objects with artist and poet Charlotte Mew.
All welcome to bring own food/drink and eat on the canalside patio between 12.45-1.30pm.

More Summer of Art action this Thursday 3rd August!🌈

Three more brilliant artists lead free family-friendly workshops taking place across our spaces at Chisenhale Art Place. Head to our bio link to book and for more info – there are still places available on all workshops but they did sell out last week as we got closer to the day!

Here’s the schedule for this Thursday:

10 - 11.15am Weaving our Futures. Artist Zethu Maseko will demonstrate weaving as an art form, with a positive impact on the environment.

11.30am – 12.45pm Let’s Dance: Beginner Kathak Dance. Tulani Kayani-Skeef will get you moving & grooving while learning the foundations of kathak dance!

12.45 – 1.30 Lunch break. All welcome to bring own food/drink and eat on the canalside patio

1.30 -2.45pm Portrait making. Birungi Kawooya will help you make portraits using plant life foraged from Tower Hamlets and Uganda mixed with African textiles.

Activities are aimed at 6yrs +, learning together with accompanying adult.

Chisenhale’s FREE Summer of Art programme kicks off tomorrow (Friday 28th July)!

Three brilliant artists lead a series of family-friendly workshops taking place across our spaces at Chisenhale Art Place. Head to our bio link to book and for more info - the last few spaces remaining!

Here’s the schedule for 28 July:

🎞 10 – 11.15 am: "Painting with Light" with artist Anna Higgins. Explore the world of direct animation and projection on film

🗺 11.30 am – 12.45 pm: "Making Tactile Maps", an outdoor workshop with Artist and educator Rebecca Griffiths.

.💃 1.30 – 2.45 pm: "Let's Dance: Beginner Street Dance" with Wiktoria Grzeset.

🎉On Tuesday, 15 August, @growhackney opens its

🎉On Tuesday, 15 August, @growhackney opens its door to Into The Wild, the alternative programme for emerging artists based at Chisenhale Studios in East London.🎉

Expect the unexpected with an evening of playful interventions, impromptu performances, and experimental art in action.

The event will include a range of different creative interventions for people to participate in or observe throughout the evening. These will happen across the venue with a mix taking place inside and outside. The main indoor bar area is wheelchair accessible, and there is a gender-neutral accessible toilet.

The outdoor terraces cannot be accessed by wheelchair and have a series of steps leading up to them. A more detailed access document including contact details for enquiries is being created and will be shared via the Grow website and the Into The Wild instagram next week.

Dogs are not permitted after 8pm except for guide and support dogs. Owners should know that loud, amplified music may be played at the venue after 8pm.

GROW is at 98C Main Yard, Wallis Road, Hackney Wick, London, E9 5LN. It's a few minutes' walk from Hackney Wick Overground and 10 minutes from Stratford via the Olympic Park. Parking is for bicycles only.

Now in its third year, Chisenhale’s Summer of Art is a free, family-friendly programme aimed at children 6+ and their adults who want to explore their creativity together.

This year, our theme is all about empowerment and inspiration, aiming to ignite the creative spark in as many young minds as possible.

The programme kicks off next Friday, 28 July, from 10-2:45 pm, with artists Anna Higgins, Rebeccah Griffiths and Wiktoria Grzes. Expect captivating workshops & experiments in photography, sculpture and dance, all taking place in Chisenhale Art Place.

Admission is free, but make sure to book your spot in advance - head to our bio link for the full program and more information.

Another Sunday activity at Open Studios, 21st May!

Studio resident Merve Iseri is a member of Painting Clubb; Painting Clubb is an inclusive and nomadic platform which practices collaborative painting and drawing sessions with its participants. It holds an unfixed, shifting approach to its sessions, welcoming new participants and scenarios at each painting and drawing event. This allows for a particularly experimental and open environment that actively evolves during the sessions. The sessions hold no rules for leading the paintings or drawings in a particular direction, fostering an environment of fluidity and spontaneity.

Painting Clubb was founded by Bora Akinciturk, Canan Batur, Jennifer Ipekel, Merve Iseri, Asli Ozdemir and Tabitha Steinberg.

On Sunday 21st Painting Clubb will host a session between 12-2 pm , everybody is welcome! At Chisenhale Art Place, Education Room.

These workshops have taken place every Sunday over the last month and all works will be exhibited during Open Studios in the Education Room.

Edwin Mingard is a socially-engaged visual artist. He works principally with moving and photographic images, exhibited as standalone artists’ film and installations.

2 hours - public performance, Barbican Centre - sea water, sea shanty, black and white negative - 2019

100% Sleep was a participatory performance by Edwin in collaboration with artists Angharad Davies and Katie Fiore, and musicians Roseanna Skikun and Pete Truin. Commissioned by UP Projects/FlatTime House as part of the Barbican’s Life Rewired programme, the work sought to playfully draw attention to the networks of tracking and surveillance that cover most aspects of our lives. Merve Iseri's paintings depict inner landscapes ex

Merve Iseri's paintings depict inner landscapes exploring the modes of language using different interactions of painting methods on bare canvas. Bare canvas as a symbol for nakedness, rawness, unpreparedness (for lifes unexpectancy).

Within this ground of nakedness searching for a new language for a more possible meeting allows flexibility in the making; paintings are not following a sketch previously made. The process is intuitive and the subject matter depicts these inner landscapes. So to speak painting can be like being on a boat journey on the river of emotions, navigating, sometimes being in control of the stir and sometimes not. The work is exploring the area where abstraction and figuration meet. This allows her to develop new methods in the process. The process is similar to weaving, weaving paint and context together simultaneously. Currently her paintings follow the composition of star constellations.
