Posted @withregram • @intothewildchisenhale Join the Into The Wild 2020 cohort to launch their collaborative postal publication, Wild Letter. These letters began as a tangible way for us to stay connected, sharing ideas - images - writings - feelings - materials - instructions -prompts - scraps , and reflecting on what we’ve learnt together over the last year.

💌

The Wild Letter has travelled (when we weren’t able to) the length and breadth of the UK: Bristol - Leeds - Manchester - London - Sheffield & The Hebrides - as each of us have responded and posted it onto the next, crossing our fingers it gets there in one piece. These elements have been assembled into a new publication, collectively edited and annotated by the 2020 cohort and this year's ITW Artist Interpreter Esther McManus and facilitated by Artist Sophie Chapman.

📬

At this event, Into The Wild artists will be sharing the project and its journey by reading/reflecting on some of the publication entries: a collaboration with queen Lizzy, questions, games, tasks, knots, stories, poems and why rocks win over scissors! As well as guiding you through making your own wild letter to post between friends and family.
Everyone that attends will also be sent a black and white “print your own” version of our publication with instructions so you can print and bind your own copies at home!

💚

In December @intothewildchisenhale and @chisenhale In December @intothewildchisenhale and @chisenhalestudiosprogramme hosted ‘Methods, Tools, Practices Experiences: A Sharing Workshop on Taking Artist Development Online’.

We asked all the contributors to put together some written reflections, instructions and other information, to serve as a reminder of the variety of work and approaches that the workshop encompassed, and that hopefully can also be used as a tool to inspire our future practices when working together online.

We have brought these materials together, with drawings made over the two days by Rebekka Yallop and other visual documentation.

The tiny letter was a way to reflect on the sessions at the start of the year, packed with food for thought & rethinking itself, led by a host of different artists & practitioners. It has been digital but operated on a respond & pass it on system. So now we are making little experiments of our own & posting & passing them onto the next artist to make work in response. Reflecting together too about the things we've learnt & talked about through the programme.

Starting off @niklasg33 had a deep dive zoom journey into his mattress, the result of a workshop with @flora.hunt ~

@sophie_chapman wrote a (de)script(ion) as Niklas termed it of the performance to camera that tried to make (non)sense of his dive between the sheets & internet space

Keep an eye out for more postal experiments as they emerge.

Posted @withregram • @southlondongallery We are delighted to announce that the SLG's tenth Postgraduate Artist in Residence is video artist and filmmaker Ufuoma Essi. 🎉

From Lewisham, south east London, Essi works predominantly with film and moving image as well as photography and sound. Her work revolves around Black feminist epistemology and the configuration of displaced histories. The archive forms an essential medium for her as an artist and it is through explorations of the archive that she aims to interrogate and disrupt the silences and gaps of the historical narrative.

A big thank you to @amajosephine and @feralpractice for inventing, organising and facilitating the weekend in these virtual times. I look forward to some hot composting with you over the coming year!
This is the last of my #mycolective takeover posts This is the last of my #mycolective takeover posts.
4 years ago I started a project to walk around the coast of England and Wales. Walking the edge, beating the bounds, tracing the skin of the country. The edge that defines it, but also a porous site of exchange and flow. A place constantly in flux, changing from tide to tide and shifting over years. It is a place where human efforts to control and defend against both other humans and the sea are very apparent, but so is the power of water and weather.

These three photos were taken on these walks.

Image 1: On the north bank of the Thames near Tilbury there has been a long history of dumping waste from London into landfill sites. At the edge of one of these sites the Thames has carved a bank, revealing a stratum of plastic debris.

Image 2: The coast path here peters out in the middle of an active landfill site. Walking over this was a weird and unforgettable experience. The bare earth seemed unnaturally giving, almost bouncy with a smell like distant rotting prawns rising from it. And warm like flesh, or did I imagine that?

I have been beginning to address waste in my work. What does it mean to throw things away? Where is away? One person’s waste is another persons treasure (and visa versa). I am starting to use waste in my work and thinking about the wastefulness of the art world.

Image 3: View from the White Cliffs of Dover. Asking lots of questions about our relationship to land and to others.
Continuing my @Samhodgeart #Mycolective takeover: Continuing my @Samhodgeart #Mycolective takeover:

I am drawn to human-made objects that have undergone transformation. Here are some of my photopolymer etchings of translucent scraps of plastic water bottles found on British beaches. They have been weathered by wave action to resemble the deep-sea creatures that they are replacing, reminding us of both our power to pollute the ocean and its power to shape us and our things. I imagine them sinking to the seabed like zooplankton did in ancient Mesozoic oceans, transformed over deep time by the weight of sediment into fossil fuels from which this plastic is made. These will be future fossils, forming new Anthropocene strata.

Reading Donna Haraway has helped me to trace tentacles of connection across time and space.

Hi this is @Samhodgeart , last of the #Mycolective Hi this is @Samhodgeart , last of the #Mycolective takeovers. I have enjoyed and already learnt so much from everyone else’s posts, thank you @worm.art.ecology @rhonaeve @jmschofield @heliotrope @_linda_persson_ Here is a bit about me, my work and some of the influences that have shaped it.

I studied natural sciences and then trained and worked as a painting conservator before becoming an artist working primarily with paint and print. My background has given me an interest in material transformations.
.
‘Now I am ready to tell how bodies are changed into different bodies’ (Ovid’s metamorphosis)

As Jane Bennett describes in ‘Vibrant Matter’ I see matter as something active and creative.

In my painting I collaborate with the materials, making with rather than from. I encourage the paint to flow, pool, erode and settle, respond to pressure, crack and fade.

In recent work I have begun to question where my painting materials come from and the stories they tell. I have begun to make my own paints with foraged materials, connecting me to the geology, biology and cultural history of particular places.

Image 1: Mutter Matter
Paint and collage on paper
Made during lockdown with materials from my local environment: Birch bark, and lichen ink from fallen trees in the park, brick dust from crumbling towpath walls, avocado pip ink and crushed eggshells from my kitchen waste.

Image 2. Growth and Form
Carborundum print with plant pigments from madder root and buckthorn.
This pattern is not designed or the product of biological growth but has emerged from the purely physical response of paint to pressure. Named after ‘D’Arcy Thompson’s 1917 book about the mathematical/physical basis for the way biological things grow and the shapes they take.

I recently completed this mural on the roof of @jealous_london in Shoreditch

This idea comes from my work on sea defence structures that protect land from erosion by the sea. The Dolos is a South African design and the word is derived from Afrikaans. It has 2 meanings, the first refers to the knuckle-joint bones used in divination practices by Sangomas healers. The second references the ox knuckle bones used by African children playing the ancient game of Knucklebones. My intention was to play with the geometric structure of the dolos and create something that was colourful and positive during these challenging times.

Many thanks to @nick_tez @jealous_london & @benchallen for giving me access at the weekends during lockdown to complete it.

Coastal erosion is the loss of coastal lands due to the breaking down & removal of sediments or bedrock from the shoreline by the sea.

It’s a natural ongoing process that has been happening for thousands of years & the transport of material away from the shoreline is balanced by new material being deposited. However as sea levels rise due to global warming the extent & severity of coastal erosion is getting worse.

If nothing is done, half of the world’s sandy beaches could disappear by 2100 due to climate change induced coastal erosion and rising seas. As global temperatures continue to rise, driven by heat trapping greenhouse gases, melting ice will raise sea levels and extreme weather events are expected to become more frequent and intensify, battering vulnerable coastlines around the world.

In my work I look at man-made objects and totemic structures that often have a geometric shape as well as the symbolism and power that we imbue them with. In the Autumn last year, I went on a pilgrimage to see some Dolosse in place around Torness Power station in Scotland. Being there and witnessing the sheer scale of all of these huge structures en masse was breathtaking.

This installation came from my ongoing body of work on sea defence structures that protect land from erosion by the sea. I love the way these shapes interlock and passively dissipate the violent energy of the waves with their form alone.

This exhibition came about through conversations on exercise walks during the first lockdown. It was a strange time and I’m so grateful to @window135x to have had this to focus on ❤️ The exhibition was viewable from the street 24 hours a day and it was interesting seeing the work change with the varying light throughout the day.

Celebrating International Women’s Day & Mother’s Day this week, focusing on strong women in our lives who #choosetochallenge 💕

This made me think of a collage I created of M E D U S A around the time of the birth of the #metoo movement. There is a thread through my work that has looked at female persecution throughout history and gender specific relics. The name Medusa originates from the words guardian or protector in Ancient Greek and also she turned everything that looked at her to stone. I was inspired by the story of Medusa as she is the ultimate anti heroine, demonised for her beauty by those that desired her then persecuted for being a victim, to me Medusa’s story scarily echoes the misogynistic realities of today 🐍

I’m currently working on an exciting public art commission for the village of Tytherington in South Gloucestershire. Here are a selection of images from the project so far. I can’t wait to share more with everyone, unfortunately the sculpture work has been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During lockdown I have been working remotely with the villagers to create a time capsule for Tytherington and it’s been great to have this connection with them during a difficult time. The time capsule will be buried once the sculpture is installed later this year.

In 2017 I was commissioned by @pendlehilllp & @insitu_pendle to create a series of twelve sculptures that would sit around the trig point on Pendle Hill in Lancashire, The Pendle Hill Summit Stones.

The idea behind the sculptures was the meeting of man and nature - the anthropocene. I cast eight of the sculptures out of concrete and then engraved each one with aspects of Pendle Hill and humanity. Each stone was dedicated to a different aspect, for example the Sphagnum Moss Stone had the cell patterns of the Sphagnum moss that makes up the peat on the hill as seen under a microscope. The four sculptures marking North, South, East and West, were carved from limestone. At the centre of each of these is a well, the sphere and the well in the centre symbolise a human egg, the beginning of all human journeys. Inspired by cairns, the well is a space where visitors are invited to pick up the last stone left in the well and leave their own, thus creating a conversation between them and the last person on the hill. When the stones were installed, like archaeology in reverse, the main body of the sculptures were concealed underground, not to be seen again completely until the ground slowly erodes around them and the stones are gradually exposed once more to the Pendle of the future.

Artist takeover: @henri_armstrong_art - Day 1 By Artist takeover: @henri_armstrong_art - Day 1

By manipulating photographs I had taken, I created my P Y L O N series, digital drawings like mandelic wheels. You can get lost staring at the shapes spinning out from the centre and to me they take on an almost religious meaning. Something so commonplace in our landscape becomes something alien and beautiful.

Artist takeover: @henri_armstrong_art - Day 1

I’m interested in man made objects and structures and how these will become FUTURE ARCHAEOLOGY which is a term I coined in my work some years ago. Much how we view ancient structures and apply meaning to them, I think about the messages we are leaving behind for the future.
I’m drawn to the stark geometric structure of pylons and I imagined them being discovered by someone not knowing what they are and how they would view them. Standing tall against the barren wasteland with their arms outstretched to the sky.

Hello! Henrietta Armstrong @henri_armstrong_art he Hello! Henrietta Armstrong @henri_armstrong_art here taking over @chisenhalestudiosartists this week. I’m looking forward to sharing some of my work and inspiration with you, as well as projects I have been working on the past year.

I’ve been at Chisenhale for nearly a year and a half now and have a studio on the second floor, which I share with @kirsty_harris_art and her furry daughter Fur Dixon, the best studio mates you could ask for.

Emma Gunningham - Chisenhale Studios Remembered My Emma Gunningham - Chisenhale Studios Remembered
My “Red Letter Day” arrived in the Autumn of 1980. I’d graduated from Reading earlier in the summer, stayed on to earn money, travelled for a month in Europe, and then the long train journey home. I remember the anxiety I felt, wondering if, where and how, I would find a studio space. What was I returning to..? I’d forgotten that earlier in the summer term Ingrid Kerma and Richard Wilson (teaching at Reading then) were talking about finding studio space to replace Butlers wharf, and invited Richard Swift and me to put our names on a list...as it turned out we were the last names on that list and my Red letter was for an interview with slides in the Covent Garden pub near the old Acme Gallery. I was very nervous but I passed!
The first image I remember from 40 years ago, is a vast space, large puddles on the floor, surrounded by big windows with broken glass. We were on the 2nd floor, coincidentally where my own studio would eventually be. I remember months of work chipping window frames, re glazing, bitumen on the roof, and getting to know the other artists, eating our lunch together and often ending up in the pub. I was staying at my mother’s the other side of London, but was normally too tired to make the journey home so would sleep on the floor of the high rise flats at the end of the road where my good friend Penny Machin was living then. I had an amazing view of the studios, canal, park, houses and all the gardens from high up in that flat. In the morning I’d return to hard labour!
The project became truly real for me when we started to measure up and build our individual studios. I really enjoyed bricklaying (breeze blocks), and the trial and error of splitting the blocks to size with hammer and chisel. I’ve no idea how long all this took, but I do remember the day when I sat on my old studio chair for the first time with my new door closed. I was so exited at all the possibilities, and wrote it all down in one of my many notebooks which unfortunately I ended up shredding years later - so no quotes from the actual time. #40yearsofchisenhale @emmagunningham #chisenhaleartists #chisenhalestudios
