We’re thrilled to be re-starting our #Studio4 Su We’re thrilled to be re-starting our #Studio4 Summer Residencies tomorrow (!), when we welcome this year’s first artist @georgehill_baker George Hill-Baker's Studio4 residency engages with materiality as a means of exploring precariousness, irony, and the subjectivity of success. Using a series of previously created digital works as reference, he will embark upon a process of translation as their digital figures, forms and textures become physical. This will be an experimental process, embracing both quotidian and more precious materials, which playfully considers how different materialities represent and reimagine the digital subject matter. During his residency, George will host a two-part session with @unioftheartslondon students; a hands-on workshop using the plaster technique of #Scagliola and a follow up discussion on how materiality can be used to communicate concepts within practice. The work created over the course of the residency will be presented as an #OpenStudio 29-30 May. These elements have been assembled into a new publication, collectively edited and annotated by the 2020 cohort and this year's ITW Artist Interpreter Esther McManus and facilitated by Artist Sophie Chapman. 📬 At this event, Into The Wild artists will be sharing the project and its journey by reading/reflecting on some of the publication entries: a collaboration with queen Lizzy, questions, games, tasks, knots, stories, poems and why rocks win over scissors! As well as guiding you through making your own wild letter to post between friends and family. In December @intothewildchisenhale and @chisenhale In December @intothewildchisenhale and @chisenhalestudiosprogramme hosted ‘Methods, Tools, Practices Experiences: A Sharing Workshop on Taking Artist Development Online’. We asked all the contributors to put together some written reflections, instructions and other information, to serve as a reminder of the variety of work and approaches that the workshop encompassed, and that hopefully can also be used as a tool to inspire our future practices when working together online. We have brought these materials together, with drawings made over the two days by Rebekka Yallop and other visual documentation. Our neighbours Chisenhale Primary School have laun Our neighbours Chisenhale Primary School have launched @chisenhalelearnplaycreate, a fantastic initiative to turn little-used road space into a pop-up playground and outdoor classroom for children at the school, and a community space for art workshops and COVID-safe performances. They have launched a crowdfunding campaign and are also looking for volunteers and other non-cash support. Please do check out their insta for more info on how to get involved.

Posted @withregram • @intothewildchisenhale For Posted @withregram • @intothewildchisenhale For the last phase of this years ITW, which like everything has had its share of flexing & moving, the artists have decided to explode one of their earlier mechanisms for keeping in touch to make a long term postal collaboration. The tiny letter was a way to reflect on the sessions at the start of the year, packed with food for thought & rethinking itself, led by a host of different artists & practitioners. It has been digital but operated on a respond & pass it on system. So now we are making little experiments of our own & posting & passing them onto the next artist to make work in response. Reflecting together too about the things we've learnt & talked about through the programme. Starting off @niklasg33 had a deep dive zoom journey into his mattress, the result of a workshop with @flora.hunt ~ @sophie_chapman wrote a (de)script(ion) as Niklas termed it of the performance to camera that tried to make (non)sense of his dive between the sheets & internet space Keep an eye out for more postal experiments as they emerge. #artistdevelopment #tinyletter #postalart [Image description: 1. The archive forms an essential medium for her as an artist and it is through explorations of the archive that she aims to interrogate and disrupt the silences and gaps of the historical narrative. Fungi, by contrast, grow well in the dark, and consume the dead. Since the earliest beginnings of life on land though, they’ve been working together. This is the last of my #mycolective takeover posts This is the last of my #mycolective takeover posts. 4 years ago I started a project to walk around the coast of England and Wales. Walking the edge, beating the bounds, tracing the skin of the country. The edge that defines it, but also a porous site of exchange and flow. A place constantly in flux, changing from tide to tide and shifting over years. It is a place where human efforts to control and defend against both other humans and the sea are very apparent, but so is the power of water and weather. These three photos were taken on these walks. Image 1: On the north bank of the Thames near Tilbury there has been a long history of dumping waste from London into landfill sites. At the edge of one of these sites the Thames has carved a bank, revealing a stratum of plastic debris. Image 2: The coast path here peters out in the middle of an active landfill site. Walking over this was a weird and unforgettable experience. The bare earth seemed unnaturally giving, almost bouncy with a smell like distant rotting prawns rising from it. And warm like flesh, or did I imagine that? I have been beginning to address waste in my work. What does it mean to throw things away? Where is away? One person’s waste is another persons treasure (and visa versa). I am starting to use waste in my work and thinking about the wastefulness of the art world. A process of transformation into an infomorph, a biological entity or consciousness existing online. The work was fuelled by an unquenchable wanderlust and a deep desire for emancipation. An attempt imagine the possibility of more and to grab it. An exercise in forming a language that captures both destruction and creation and inspires metamorphosis. Change and transformation are constant themes throughout my practice. Always in relation to blackness. The studio is 493 sq feet and costs £400 a month plus electricity. It's on the third floor, with dual aspect windows south and west facing. Please be aware we have no lift and there is no heating or wifi in our studios.

Founder member Ian Chapman speaks: As one of the m Founder member Ian Chapman speaks: As one of the more recent contributors to #40yearsofchisenhale I have the benefit of having read all of the preceding postings. I recall with pleasure many of the activities and events that others have reminisced about, including fish finger butties and warming 'builders brews' in the makeshift 'canteen'; the events and parties that (apparently) I played into big style; and getting pissed on the whisky that we bought in for Arts Place Trust Directors' meetings (I think we were of the opinion in those days that Board member types always drank whisky when discussing important issues and making big decisions)'. Also, of course, the chain gangs of ‘founding members' shuttling Thermolite building blocks up the stairway. Not just any stairway, by the way, but a rather fine example of Art Deco steel cast railings and polished marble treads as I recall (probably a 'materially inaccurate' and romantically over-egged recollection). There's an existing reference to the 'engine driven ladder hoist' used for propelling building blocks to the upper floor of the building. As one of the more (self-acclaimed) industrially experienced amongst us, I was one of the ‘chargehands’ operating this 'machine hire kit' along with Richard Wilson. I operated the controls at the loading end (street level) and Richard the receiving end (roof), with the bricks being shuttled down to the floor beneath after being stacked on the (necessarily flat) roof. On reflection, this was particularly dangerous work for me and Richard to be engaged in; with entanglement of clothing, or digits, in the machinery being a definite risk. However, the main risk wasn't so much to feet and toes, when inevitably dropping the odd block (or more likely when big bits broke off) as Richard and I both possessed Totector (or similar) boots. No! The biggest risk emanated from the barrel of ale that our neighbouring brewery owner had donated to us as a gesture of goodwill (Patrick; Black Horse Brewery, I seem to recall - a good bloke). This barrel was situated just inside the ground floor shutter doorway, and half-a-round of half-pints went up the hoist every now and again.

Artist takeover: @henri_armstrong_art - Day 7 I r Artist takeover: @henri_armstrong_art - Day 7 I recently completed this mural on the roof of @jealous_london in Shoreditch This idea comes from my work on sea defence structures that protect land from erosion by the sea. The Dolos is a South African design and the word is derived from Afrikaans. It has 2 meanings, the first refers to the knuckle-joint bones used in divination practices by Sangomas healers. The second references the ox knuckle bones used by African children playing the ancient game of Knucklebones. My intention was to play with the geometric structure of the dolos and create something that was colourful and positive during these challenging times. Artist takeover: @henri_armstrong_art - Day 6 Coa Artist takeover: @henri_armstrong_art - Day 6 Coastal erosion is the loss of coastal lands due to the breaking down & removal of sediments or bedrock from the shoreline by the sea. It’s a natural ongoing process that has been happening for thousands of years & the transport of material away from the shoreline is balanced by new material being deposited. In the Autumn last year, I went on a pilgrimage to see some Dolosse in place around Torness Power station in Scotland.
