In December Chisenhale Studios and Into the Wild hosted an online workshop that brought together alternative arts education and artist development programmes from around the country. The aim of the workshop was to connect with each other and share the knowledge and experience developed over the past year, as all of our programmes have shifted online due to the pandemic. We invited our peers to respond to the question, ‘How can we strengthen our artist development practice by learning from each other as we move into a socially distanced 2021?’

With a focus on learning by doing, we invited each programme participating in the online workshop to propose a practically rooted mini-workshop or presentation. The range of responses we received was fantastic and the variety of activities and ways of connecting that were shared were really inspiring.

The programme included contributions from:

Lady Kitt (Constellations/ The NewBridge Project), Constellations (UP Projects and Flat Time House), Rabbits Road Seasonal School, The Other MA, Syllabus V & Syllabus VI, Into the Wild, The Collective Studio, Alt MFA, Joseph Morgan Schofield and Sonia Barrett (Myco-Lective), Harriet Rose Morely & GRADJOB, School of the Damned

As well as leading an activity based around the new Mesh Wiki, members of the 2020 Into the Wild cohort also supported the event through creative note-taking – the image above was created by Rebekka Yallop as part of this process.

After the workshop, we asked each of those leading activities to put together some written documentation, that all attendees could refer back to as a reminder of the rich variety of approaches shared across the two days, and as prompts for thinking about their own practice in continuing to work and meet online in the immediate future. We are pleased to share this document here.
