Come and join us for another great line up at Chisenhale Open Weekend 2-4 October.
Chisenhale Art Place Members (Chisenhale Studios, Chisenhale Gallery and Chisenhale Dance Space) open the doors of our shared building for a free weekend of open studios, exhibition, performance and events. For a full programme click here.
The Studios will be open with the following activities:
Friday 6-9pm
Saturday and Sunday 12-5pm
Open Studios:
Most of our 40 artists will be in their studios throughout the weekend. This is a unique opportunity to meet different artists, experience their artwork directly and learn about their working processes.
Group exhibition:
Emerging artists from our inaugural professional development programme ‘Into the Wild’ will have a group show in Studios 2 & 4, curated by Emma Warburton and Bar Yerushulmi. Additional performances Friday evening in Chisenhale Dance Space. Performance times here.
Exhibitions of community artwork by:
Shutter Nutters
A collection of photographs from members of this user-led mental health photography group, that regularly use Chisenhale Studios’ Education room as their base to discuss and develop their work.
Chisenhale Primary School
A selection of work from Chisenhale Primary School students who have taken part in the National Arts Awards, led by local artist Sara Heywood. The programme aims to inspire young people to grow their arts and leadership talents: it’s creative, valuable and accessible and we’re proud to be involved.
In addition to the weekend open studios and exhibitions, you can also have a go at making something yourself:
Saturday 3rd Oct
12.30-1 pm: Dry point printing workshop
With Kate Hardy, in Studio 5 (FULLY BOOKED! )
Learn how to dry point print on plaster which is great fun but a little bit messy!!! Participants will go home with a fabulous printed plaque made from their own drawing. Please arrive at the start of the session, ideally booking in advance to avoid disappointment as we can only accommodate a maximum of 8 people.
3-5pm: Portrait workshop (Drop-in)
With Vincent Milne, in ground floor Education Room.
Learn some new techniques for drawing or painting portraits. We’ll have supplies on hand of pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolour and oil based paints – and of course, paper. All levels welcome, including beginners. Stay for as little or as long as you like during the session, but we’re sure you’ll wish you had more time with this popular teacher.
Sunday 5th October
1pm: Artist talk: The artist as a work in progress
Alina Kisina Studio 29B
Alina will show examples of her work and share her experience of making key transitions as a photographer, moving through different approaches to creating work and exploring new possibilities. As she has recently ventured into new photographic territories and styles, she’ll be asking the question: what are the qualities and threads that remain in the identity of an artist as they continue progressing in their practice? Talk will last around 45 minutes, including discussion time.
3-4pm: Tempura Painting workshop
Joy Girvin in Studio 30 (booking required)
Tempera is pure colour pigment mixed with egg yolk and water and sometimes a small amount of lavender or linseed oil. It was originally used on wood panels by Italian Painters such as Duccio before the invention of oil paint, but more contemporary artists like Mark Fairnington (studio 37) continue to use tempera paint as one of their painting mediums. Participants need to arrive at the start time and ideally book in advance to avoid disappointment.
With the exception of the ground floor education room, the studios can only be accessible by stairs.
A small selection of hot food will served up on the canal-side patio by our friends at Sour Jerk.
