Thank you to everyone that joined us for our Street Party on Chisenhale Road 🌟 On Saturday we brought together friends, neighbours, and new faces from across the community to celebrate creativity, culture, and art. 🎨🎶 A few highlights from the day: - The beautiful Classical Indian Dance performance 'Empathy' from Mukul and Ghetto Tigers @noeldatta - An energizing Caribbean Dance workshop with the amazing @shebamontserrat. - A buzzing mix of live music and DJ sets bringing the vibes - Inspiring art workshops led by @sara.heywood and Shree Desai where we got to explore cyanotype printing, rangoli painting, and block printing. - The famous pet show and raffle - Our new friends @wearebardbooks with their flash fiction competition. - The Chisenhale Gallery exhibition by @simnikiwebuhlungu - And, of course, our communal picnic where everyone was welcome to bring food and share stories. REMINDER: OPEN HOUSE 2024--> This Weekend: Sunday, REMINDER: OPEN HOUSE 2024--> This Weekend: Sunday, 15th September 12-5pm On Sunday 15th September, our building will open its doors to offer an insight into the history of the building as part of Open House Festival 2024. The Chisenhale Works building — now Chisenhale Art Place — was bought by Tower Hamlets Council in 1972 and leased to a group of artists. The derelict remains of Chisenhale Works provided unconventional hope for the founding artists and dancers who were evicted from their former studios at Butlers Wharf in 1980. The artists refurbished the building themselves over a period of 2 years, using cinder blocks to build studio walls. Chisenhale Studios has been working in conjunction Chisenhale Studios has been working in conjunction with Tower Hamlets Youth League @towerhamletsnow to deliver a Summer Academy as part of our Future Artists programme, inviting young people to take part in creative activities across 5 days over the last month. The fifth and final session saw Chisenhale Art Place deliver a introductory photography workshop led by @gabulaurent, inviting young people to take and work into self portraits taken using polaroid photography. The students were then invited to engage in a dance workshop at @chisenhaledance. The second session invited young people to engage with a dance workshop at @chisenhaledance led by Astha Desai through @pagravdanceco, before moving on to a weaving workshop led by @cecilylj and @renrrnren at Chisenhale Studios. Thank you to our fantastic facilitators for making this happen and providing a nourishing experience for all of the young people attending. Chisenhale Studios would like to say a huge thank Chisenhale Studios would like to say a huge thank you to @chromatic.agency for their fascinating contribution to the legacy of our building during their residency in Studio 4. Chromatic Agency is a collaborative project between architectural designer Sandy Rompotiyoke and artist nnull that focuses on decolonising space and reclaiming agency. Their work investigates how political structures and value systems inform how we engage with material cultures, landscapes and ecology. They are primarily positioned against economic issues of capitalism, colonialism and neoliberalism and structural issues of modernism. During their residency at Chisenhale Art Place, Chromatic Agency has been exploring these themes through material investigations based around Tower Hamlets Cemetary Park. "Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park is a well-loved 31-acre nature reserve nestled in the heart of East London and is one of its ‘Magnificent Seven’ cemeteries. The cemetery park is an important space for the heritage of working class communities and people of colour. This is because of its proximity to notable sites such as the Docklands, the Bow Road Workhouse and the long-forgotten Chinatown that once existed in Limehouse. Whilst the population of those buried in the cemetery is as diverse as the history of migration in London, only the graves of long deceased wealthy white anglicans are currently visible as they are made of stone. A majority of the burials for working class and global majority people were marked with wooden markers meaning that their histories degraded and became less visible over time. As a result of the varying biodegradability of burial markers in the cemetery, certain communities are not as visibly documented in the rich history of the cemetery." Studio 4 Residency 🪟 @sara.heywood is a mixed Studio 4 Residency 🪟 @sara.heywood is a mixed media artist, based in East London. Intrinsic to her practice is a collaborative dialogue between people and place and the point where natural and manmade environments and materials converge or impact one another. For Chisenhale Studio 4 Summer Residency 2024, Sara plans to explore the boundaries of experimental analogue photographic developing processes using locally sourced natural and found materials. The residency will also research and take inspiration from the work of the late photographer and collagist Nigel Henderson, who lived at 46 Chisenhale Road in the 1940s and 50s. Chisenhale Art Place would like to say a huge than Chisenhale Art Place would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came to our Family Day back in May 🎉 Part of our Future Artists initiative, the Family Day was an incredibly important day for us. It aimed to bring members of our community together, in the immediate area and beyond, to celebrate creativity in all forms. We achieved this vision, as record numbers of families and visitors were welcomed to our building to engage in various events across the building, such as a community picnic, dance and art workshops, open studios and guided tours. We would also like to say a special thanks to all who helped to enrich the experience of visitors: @orlandaotley who ran creative dance workshops at Chisenhale Dance Space, Deshi Shad who provided samosas for our community lunch, @sara.heywood who led guided SEN tours around Chisenhale Studios, @cecilylj and @renrrnren who led a fantastic textile and casting workshop and Richard Layzell for running performative tours of the Studios.
